SPC Sep 7, 2021 1630 UTC Day 1 Convective Outlook

SPC 1630Z Day 1 Outlook Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1140 AM CDT Tue Sep 07 2021 Valid 071630Z - 081200Z ...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER PARTS OF THE GREAT LAKES REGION... ...SUMMARY... Damaging winds and large hail, along with possibly a tornado or two, will be possible from Lower Michigan into central Illinois and northern Indiana. ...WI/IL/IN/MI... Morning water vapor imagery shows a strong upper trough digging southeastward across MN/WI. Ascent ahead of this feature has aided in the maintenance of scattered strong/severe thunderstorms producing large hail over eastern WI and northern Lower MI. Model guidance has not handled this activity very well, but recent observational trends suggest that storms will not weaken as daytime heating continues and the upper trough approaches. Therefore, storms will likely increase in coverage over Lower MI through the afternoon, with additional storms developing southward into parts of IL/IN. Damaging winds and hail are the main threats, although forecast soundings show sufficient low-level vertical shear to warrant some concern for a tornado or two over southeast MI and northern IN. ...KS/OK... Isolated afternoon and early evening thunderstorms are expected along a weak surface boundary over parts of southern KS and northern OK. The strongest cells may produce locally gusty/damaging winds for a few hours. ..Hart/Wendt.. 09/07/2021 Read more LIVE: spc.noaa.gov
