SPC Jul 18, 2021 0600 UTC Day 1 Convective Outlook

SPC 1200Z Day 1 Outlook Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1239 AM CDT Sun Jul 18 2021 Valid 181200Z - 191200Z ...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL PLAINS... ...SUMMARY... Marginally severe thunderstorms with hail and strong wind gusts are possible today across parts of the southern and central Plains. ...Southern and Central Plains... An upper-level ridge will remain in place today from the Four Corners region northward into the northern Rockies. An upper-level trough will move southward across the mid Mississippi Valley. At the surface, a moist airmass will be in place across the southern and central Plains. Moderate to strong instability is expected to develop along the western edge of this moist airmass, from Oklahoma and southwestern Kansas northward into south-central South Dakota. Although large-scale ascent will remain weak across the region, enhanced low-level convergence along the western edge of the moist airmass should enable a few storms to initiate during the late afternoon. This convection will move east-southeastward into parts of the southern and central Plains during the late afternoon and early evening. In addition to moderate instability, deep-layer shear will be strong enough for an isolated severe threat. Cells that move into the strongest instability may be able to produce hail and marginally severe wind gusts. ..Broyles/Squitieri.. 07/18/2021 Read more LIVE: spc.noaa.gov
