A significant warm-up is expected through early next week. A period of rainy weather is expected Sat. afternoon through Mon., with icy conditions possible Sat. afternoon as surfaces remain below freezing after the recent cold stretch. pic.twitter.com/2x2gG5h4jv

This morning's bitterly cold temperatures as "seen" by our high-res GOES satellite. Features like urban heat islands of Chicago & Rockford show up nicely in this image as localized "warm" spots. Green in this image is the coldest area, while light blue & gray are less cold. pic.twitter.com/03zlhqpr96

Light to moderate snow will affect area thru evening, causing snow covered roads & slippery, slowed travel. Most persistent moderate snow rates primarily south of I-80 in yellow outlined area on radar image. Slow down & increase following distance when driving. #ilwx #inwx pic.twitter.com/iI920SzoRg

Another round of accum snow will occur this p.m. spreading west to east. This will bring moderate snow rates at times especially in the darker blue shaded area where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect. Expect slick spots overlapping all or some of the eve commute. #ILwx #INwx pic.twitter.com/pbSgUKxSSo

With widespread ice cover in place on area rivers, big warm-up this wknd-early next wk will increase risk for break-up ice jams. Residents along rivers should remain alert for flooding. Our latest round of accumulating snow is overspreading the area this aftn. Expect to encounter snow covered roads & longer travel times during commute, as snow will quickly stick due to very cold air & ground temps. 2-5" amounts forecast in darker blue shaded areas. #ilwx #inwx pic.twitter.com/YkFihH16xB

No all time records were reached officially for Chicago. We had a "high" of -10 at 12:01am Wednesday, so we missed the -11 all time record by 1 degree & a few minutes. The coldest low was -23, which is 4 short of the all-time record. Daily records were shattered in many cases.
— NWS Chicago (@NWSChicago) January 31, 2019
"When will it start?!" A good question!
— NWS Chicago (@NWSChicago) January 31, 2019
Accumulating snow will spread east during from mid afternoon thru early eve. Snow will last for ~9 hours, which means the snow will impact part or all of this eve's commute. Expect some slick roads given the cold temperatures. #ILwx #INwx pic.twitter.com/unt1trMVuj
Warming trend coming with fog and drizzle likely for the weekend. pic.twitter.com/p57OrufyoF

Another coooold start.
— NWS Chicago (@NWSChicago) January 31, 2019
Widespread temperatures of -15° to -30° to start today, and yes that is actual temperatures. While far less wind than yesterday, still enough for added danger & a wind chill warning is in effect until noon. Dress in layers and limit exposure. #ILwx #INwx pic.twitter.com/qMdECdUD30
